DISTRICT NEWS.
WAI-Tdl-TOI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At a meeting of suppliers to the local fnctory, held at Mr. J. T. Phillips' residence on Wednesday last, it was decided to..hold an afternoon tea gathering at the factory on Thursday next for the purpose of saying good-bye to Mr. and Mrs. Wmi. Taylor, who are leaving in a few days for Bell Block, where Mr. Tavlor takes charge of that factory. Recently a very' pleasant gathering took place in tho Plka.ii schoolroom, where a number of friends of Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Smith met to bid them farewell on the occasion of their departure for Wanganui. Air. V. Ekdahl, on behalf of Okoke and Pikau residents, presented Mr. Smith with a case of pipes; and Mrs. Smith with a silver entree dish, and. in a happy little speech, expressed the regret that was felt at losing Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Mr. Smith suitably responded, and remarked ihat both Mrs. Smith and himself were sorry to leave the district, In which they had made many friends. Dancing was Indulged in during the evening, Mr. J. Brough supplying the music, and Mr Kric Ekdahl acting as' SfC, , both gentlemen giving every satisfaction. On Friday evening last a. most successful dance was held in the Okoke schoolroom, jWhlch was welt filled. The playing of Mr. J. Brough on the accwdeon provided efflcioi-t dance music, whilst ai M.C. Mr. Symaiin proved most attentive. An excellent supper was provided by the ladles of the district, and was done full justice to by those present. The Indies of Uruti are to be complimented upon tho success of their plain and fancy <f"vss ball, which was held In the tTruti Hall on Friday evening last. There were visitors present from Pukearuhc, Uremii. Wai-tol-toi, Wattara and other parts of the district, and the fancy costumes were both numerous and affeet-'vo, being nicely set off by the attractive decorations of the hall. The music, supplied hv the Waltara orchestra, left nothing to be deiirel in this respect, whilst the duties of M.C. were ably discharged by Mr. .1. Telfar, assisted by Mr. E. Jones. The ladies provided a most excellent sit-down supper, which was much ap. preciated. I am informed that the position of manager to the i-toi-tol factory will be ailed by Mr, to. i:t...s, who was formerly in the Warea factory, and last season took charge of this factory during the temporary absence of Mr. Taylor. The shareholders of the Bell Block Company gave the latter gentleman a most enthusiastic reception at their annual meeting last week, and in his remarks on matters "pertaining to the future welfare of tho factory, Mr. Taylor placed Himself on a most happy footing with the suppliers. If the piercing winds and heavy frosts experienced lately continue much longer the newly-calved cows will have a rough spin and the milk supply be considerably affected. There has been very little growth during the past week or so, and the frosts have cut off a lot of grass, causing a serious shortage. Mr. Mooney, of Thorndale, Wal-tol-tol, had a rather unpleasant experience on Sunday morning. It appears he was feeding the pigs, snd entered the stye to arrange one of the troughs, and upon knocking the boar aside, which was causing most of the trouble, he was attacked by that animal, with the result that he received n couple of nasty rips on one band and leg, causing a severe loss of Mood. Mr. Taylor, from the factory, convejr ed the sufferer In a motor ear to the New Plymouth Hospital, where he Is progressing as well as can bo expected.
