They circled the course twice, and then went out on the road in pittas rain, being cheered as they passed through villages. Infantry and cavalry were posted every twenty-five yards to prevent Interference. GUsliam (South Africa) with Kohlemannen (Finland) close up, lead the earlier stages. A nasty hill tested the runners at thirteen kilometres, where the lead was unchanged. At 13 kilometres the position was Gitsham, Kohlemannejt, Broos (Belgium), and Blase (Italy), while others tailed out of eight. The pac» was great Gitsham and Kofcjemannen drew away and appeared to have the race in hand, and at twenty kilometres they were running shoulder to shoulder Broos was two hundred metres, and Blase four hundred metres behind. Gitsham commenced to fall back seveu kilometres from home. Lossman meanwhile gained rapidly, but failed tv overhaul Kohlemannen, who entered the Stadium with a good lead, breaking the tape thirteen secahead of the winner.
