A PECULIAR POSITION,' By Teleitraph.—Press Assn —Copyrisht. Sydney, Aug. 20. Cabinet has adopted the chief electoral . officer's report- stating that he is unable to conduct the by-election caused by Mr. Beeby's resignation owing to the fact that no machinery is provided'in the new electoral law for a by-election. The Speaker's writ is consequently useless. Speculation is rife as ; to the next steps. Some quarters are urging that the Government should immediately pass amending regulations.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Association. ' [Mr. G. S. Beeby was appointed by the Labor Government of N.S.W. to an Industrial Court Judgeship. There was a genial consensus of opinion that Mr. Beeby was eminently fitted to ocimpy the position to which he has been appointed, but there was also a general view that the new Government had effected a political coup, having made an appointment to the Bench which meets with almost universal approval, besides making its own position on the floor of the new Parliament safe for an indefinite period.] •PACIFIC TRIP IMPROBABLE. Melbourne, August 20. In the House of Representatives, the Arbitration Amendment Bill was read a second time. The Parliamentary trip to the Pacific Islands may be abandoned, owing to pressure on Ministers' time, also to the attitude of the Labor Party, which is officially holding aloof.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
