CHARGE AGAINST A YOUTH.
SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS' DETENTION. Peter Payne, a youth, 18 years of age, who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court on Friday- afternoon to a charge of having committed an unnatural sexual offence at Okau, in the Mokau district, appeared for sentence before His Honor Mr. Justice Salmond at the Supreme Court-on Saturday afternoon, Mr. R. H. Quilliam appeared on behalf of the prisoner, and asked if, in view of the prisoner's youth, his Honor could not see his way to extend to him the benefits of the First Offenders' Act, by admitting the prisoner to probation. Mr. QuiJiam said that this would give N the prisoner a better chance of reforming himself
His Honor characterised the offence as the most shameful crime which it was possible for anyone to commit, and expressed hi; regret that such acts were becoming too common. Under the circumstances he could not admit the prisoner io probation, as that would not act as a sufficient deterrent to others. The prisoner would be placed in the hands of the Prisons Board to deal with as they thought best, and would be sentenced to detention for reformative treatment for a period of three years.
