FARM AND DAIRY.

For tha past season the output of cheese at the Greytown Dairy Factory was over 400 tons. This coming season a 25 per cent, increase is expected. ' *

An important consignment of live stock from Britain reached Auckland on Tuesday by the Leitrim, including 13 purebred Aberdeen-Angus cattle, from the North of Scotland. They -consisted of four 'bulls, two cows, four calves, and three heifers;. These cattle have been brought out by D. CI. Grani, of Hawke's Bay, to which district they will be forwarded. An entire blood Shetland pony consigned to Lyttelton was also brought by the vessel. These animals were accommodated on deck in speciallyconstructod shelters:, which did not prove equal to the strain of an Atlantic crossing. The shelters were carried away, and the ship's crew were treated to the' spectacle of a valuable Aberdeefj-Angiw bull wandering about the deck, over which heavy seas were washing. The latest indication of high prices for dairy produce (says the Chronicle) is the receipt by the directors of' the Levin Dairy Company of an offer of 2s 4d per lb (silils 4d per ewt.) for their new season's make. It would go to the American market. This is a price that is from IJd to 2d a lb better than the Imperial Government's tentative offer for the New Zealand output, and {roes to strengthen 'the view that the producers would receive much better treatment on the open market than under the British Government's controlled purchase. At the annual meeting of the Levin Dairy Co., Mr H. Mortensen referred to an aspect of dairying that escaped the attention of the majority of dairymen. That was the cost of producing a pound of butter fat on the farm. He stated that he had gone into the question and after allowing for all expenses and the remuneration of the supplier at Is per lb for a 10-liour day, he found that the cost was 1b flftd per lb of butter fat. This showed that the farmer was not getting the return lie should from' his labour and the capital invested.
