At the meeting of the Taranaki Hospital. Board yesterday, Nurse Cartwriglit tendered her resignation, which was accepted witli regret. Mr. G. H. Buckoridge, of Hawera, expects to leave New Zealand in November on a trip to England.
Dr. J. N. Waddell, of Timaru, has been appointed house surgeon at the Palmerston North Hospital. Mr. W. Lints (well-known in Taranrki) has left for Australia in connecfion with theatrical enterprises there. Mr. and' Mrs. Honors, Manaia, were summoned to Trentham on Tuesday, where their son Eddie lies dangerously ill. Mr. W, A. Collins was last night elected chairman of the Wangamii Education Hoard.—Press Association. The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, Leader of the Opposition, is reported to bo making good progress towards recovery of his health. Miss Loekhead, matron of tlie Patea Hospital, has been appointed matron of the Hawera Hospital, and on Monday night the citizens of Patea assembled in the Town Hall to bid her farewell nnd to present her with a purse of sovereigns.
At the annual meeting of shareholders of the Mangatoki Dairy Co. a vote of sympathy with the relatives of the lute Mr. W. A. Parkinson, was passed, the mover of the resolution making feeling reference to the loss sustained by the district.
The wedding fo«k place at Wliiteley Church, New Plymouth, yesterday of Miss Edna A. Brooker, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Brooker, and Mr. \V. P. Okey, eldest son of Mr. F. W. Okey The service was choral, Mr. If White presiding at the organ and the choir, of which the bridegroom is a member, led the singing. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. P. Martin. The bridesmaids were Miss Lois Brooker, sister of the bride, and Mis-i Gwenda Moore, niece of the bridegroom. Mr. Allan Brooker, brother of the bride, acted as best man. After the service a reception was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Brooker.
Late English files announce the appointment of the Bishop of Hereford (Dr. Hensley Henson) to the see of Durham in succession to the late Dr. Handley Moule, The Bishopric of Durham ranks next to London in seniority, and carries a seat, in the Lords. Bishop Henson is well-known as an eloquent preacher with unorthodox views that have provoked some opposition in clerical circles. His rapid promotion in the Church, however, is remarkable. In the last ten years he has been successively Canon of Westminster, Dean of Durham, Bishop of Hereford, and now Bishop of Durham.
