Alderman McSweeney, Lord Mayor of Cork, was court-martialled, being charged with seditious speech and with having in his possession a police code and also documents the publication of which was calculated to causa disaffection.
McSweeney was looking ill, owing to a hunger strike. He said: "I am Lord Mayor and Chief Magistrate. I declare this court illegal and those participating in it liable to arrest under the Irisn Republican laws." McSweeney was found, guilty. Sentence was deferred. In the House of Commons, Sir Hamar Greenwood state! that the Lord Mayor, of Cork was b»ing court-martialled on charges of being in possession of a secret police cipher code. MORE KILLING. Received August J7, 8.10 p.m. London, .August 17. A motor car returning homeward after sports at Lurgan was fired on at Bannfoot ferry. Two passengers were killed. 1 !«>s?<»tor Wilson, of the Irish Constabulary, was shot dead when leaving a shop at Tempjemore, County Tipper-ary.—Aits.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
