RETIREMENT OF TEACHERS.
THE AGE UMIT, MATTER OF ENFORCEMENT.' The retiring age for teachers was under discussion at the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board yesterday. A .circular received from the Education Department stated that a deputation had protested to the Minister against the practice of some Education Boards of terminating the engagement of all teachers- on reaching the retiring age of 55 in the case of women, and C 5 in the case of men. "The Department is aware that the Boards have full discretion, hut it was never intended that women and men whose usefulness is not. impaired should be forced out of the service. In the view of the Department and the Minister, the Hoards should use their discretion wisely in these cases, and especially when the supply of teachers is limited those only who are not capable of carrying on their work satisfactorily -'SliouM have their engagements tormina te'l/'
On the motion of Messrs. 11. Trirab'.J and R. Masters, M.P.. -ihe Tina; i! regarded its protest against the circular, and the pio'vel' and seconder expressing the opinion that by the time teachers reached the age . mentiou /i they should retire. Mr. Maste:s also stressed- the fact that if such a course was not followed opportunities for advancement of youngor members of the profession would not be available, and there would he many who would have a long wait before rising to a fairly substantial position.
