CHEESE PROSPECTS.
BRIGHTER THAN BUTTER. ADVICE FROM HOME. By private advices from a highly crmpetent authority in London some interesting observations on the market for dairy produce in England have been received by Mr. S. T>Pavlour Smith, of Dannevirke. ' Reviewing the position as regards cheese, the writer points out that Canada experts to .realise is 2d an 1 1, 3d per lbf.o.b. at Montreal for her cheese,' though it reached the English market in the summer and had to compete with the Government-owned cheese, which was expected to supply about half the Z, eqUirements I, P ti]l January, is-sl. New Zealand's output has the advantage of not reaching the Emdish market until these stocks are exhausted, thus" placing it in a remarkably good position., ' It was further pointed out that practically all the butter supplies from the Continental producers will be forced into England through the lack of buying power in Europe, but with cheese' the position was entirely different, New Zealand and Canada being the only suppliers of this commodity. Again, hitherto England has been our only market, but others, suchjas America aid South Africa, are now open to our trade. Under these considerations, it would appear that the prospects are more reliable than for butter, especially in view of the fact noted above, though the buyers are keen to get a really good article, seeing they have had but little choice of late years, and if the markets were open fair prices might be looked for. The writer points out that New Zealand has now become the largest supplier of dairy produce to the English markets.
