GAMBLING ON RACES.
GRAND NATIONAL WEEK RETURNS. The Grand National racing week at Christchurch—three days gallops and three days trotting—was brought to a conclusion yesterday with the postponed final day of the trots, and the six days' sport shows a remarkable increase in the amount of money invested through the totalisator. Tor the six days a sum of £372,870 was handled, £213,475 being devoted to the .sallops and £159,395 to the trots. The three days gallops last year attracted investments totalling ' £187,341, and the trots on the same occasion induced the investment of £135,117 10s. This year's racing carnival, therefore, shows an increase in totalisator receipts of £70,411 10s.
