In the Assembly the Government was defeated on a snap vote by 43 votes to 42, on a proposal to raise the abatement on income tax from £3OO to £SOO for married men. The majority consisted of Laborites, Nationalists, and half-a-dozen Unionists, including Mr. Smart, leader of the party.—Reuter Service. Received August 15, 5.5 p.m. Capetown, August 14. No political significance is attached to the Government's defeat over the income tax exemption.—Reuter Service.
