£lsoo FOR THE PARK.
SPLENDID BESULT OF THE | CAMPAIGN. THE CARNIVAL'S MERRY END. The splendid total of £ISOO lias been raised by the effort in New Plymouth, headed by Mrs. C. H. Burgess, in aid of funds to improve Pukekura Park. The campaign ended at midnight on Saturday, when £285 was taken for the last day's business at the enrnival at the Coronation, Hall. The details of the grand total are not yet available. The "park effort," as it became known, was a success from the start, and the result exceeds the most sanguine hopes of |hat willing band of workers who were responsible for the outstanding success of the carnival. The last day of the carnival on Saturday was a merry occasion. From the opening.in the morning business ait the various stalls proceeded briskly, and before the evening was far spent many stalls had to put up their shutters bocause all the good things were sold out. In the upper end of the "hall a large space was reserved- for dancing, and throughout the evening at frequent intervals, a merry crowd of dancers tripped gaily round to the strains of mi excellent orchestra. Grea>t thanks is due to Mrs. George and her assistants for the music for this part of the carnival.' With untiring care the workers supplied the waiuts of nn eager public, and interest in the proceedings did not flag there was nothing more fo buy. When the hour was becoming late all goods remaining in the stalls were put up to auction and cleared, everyone seeming pleased with the bargains secured, whether good value, was received for the expense or not. Mr. L. B. Webster wielded the hammer, his effort netting about £3O. Much credit ii duo to Mrs. Burgess find her willing helpers who took upon themselves the formidable task of raising a £IOOO park fund, and the extent to which that amount was exceeded speaks volumes for the work done by that unselfish and public-spirited band who threw themselves so whole-hearted-ly into their task.
