BENEFIT OF THE COMMANDEER By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the House of Representatives this afternoon Mr. Massey laid on the table a report of the Imperial Supplies Department, which showed that to the end of the financial year a sum of £141,680,897 had been paid for New Zealand produce by the Imperial authorities. Replying to the discussion arising out of the paper, Mr. Massey said the commandeer of our produce had been a great success, and the Imperial Supplies Department had worked without a hitch. There was not an individual in the Dominion who had not benefited by its operations. We could not. have gone on had arrangements not been made to get our products on to th'e Home markets. By doing this the cost of living had. not been increased by one penny in thiß country. The cost of living here was governed entirely by the high cost of articles which we had to import, and not by what we produce ourselves. Mr. Massey read a list of prices current in Scotland, consideration of which convinced him that the people of New Zealand scarcely realised how well off they were.
