DEFENCE OF THE POLES. THE FINAL' STRUGGLE. Berlin, August 11. The Zeitung's correspondent at the front telegraphs that' the Reds are ad-' vancing and have been strongly reinforced and have occupied the Moldau corridor. The Poles are falling back. A pitched battle is developing on the Polish Chorzele line, which will have a decisive effect on the northern flank. The Reds' mounted storm troops are fighting well, but the Polish troops are demoralised ■ owing to propaganda. The council declares: "The last struggle for the honor and maintenance of the Polish nation has begun." A mass meeting resolved to defend the city to the uttermost and great patriotic processions marched the streets. Reports from Riga state that the Bolsheviks do not wish to prolong the war another hour for the sake of creating a revolution in Poland, but are ready to assist a spontaneous revolution if one. occurs.

HELP FROM AMERICA. Washington, August 11. As the result of the assurances in the American Note to Italy, the Polish Minister, Lubomirski, says that Poland is about to ask immediate American aid in the form of an extension of credits for the purchase of war stocks. AMERICA'S ATTITUDE. INDEPENDENCE OF POLAND. New York, August 11. Washington, in a Note to Italy, re- | vealed the American position in the Russo-Polish situation.

Mr. Bainbridge Colby (Secretary for State) said the Government approved of the efforts to arrange an armistice, and it would regard with satisfaction a de-» claration by the Allies and associated Powers that the territorial integrity and true boundaries of Russia would be respected. The Government would not participate in the new plan to expand the armistice into a general European conference, because that might involve two results from which the people of America strongly recoiled, the recognition of the Bolshevists and the settlement of Russian problems upon the basis of the dismemberment of Russia.

The Note says Americans are earnestly solicitous for the maintenance of Poland's territorial integrity and political independence, and the Government will employ every means to render these effectual.—Reuter Service. LLOYD GEORGE'S STATEMENT. London, August 11. The NorthcMe organs and the newspapers generally applaud Mr. Lloyd George's speech as an admirable exposition of the true facts of the situation.— i Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
