RETURNS FOR LAST MONTE. LARGE INCREASE ON LAST YEAR. By Telopaph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Nigh*. Immigration returns snow that during the month of July 3606 persons arrived in New Zealand, as compared with 1785 in July last year. Of the arrival last month 1520 came from the United Kingdom, and 1832 from the Commonwealth. The departures totalled 2942, as against "895. The bulk of those who left New Zealand last month went to Australia. The arrivals during last month exceeded the departures by 664, while in July last year the gain was 770.
THE NEW BILL. FREEDOM TO BRITISH SUBJECTS. (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter.)' Wellington, Last Night. The Immigration Restriction Amend* meat Bill, a forecast of which was published yesterday, has been circulated. There is one definition in the Jill which is of importance.. The general provision of the Bill is that New Zealand is to be free to British subjects, and this would not exclude many classes of persons, and especially Indiana, to whom serious exception might he taken. There has been more outcry About the influx of "Hindus" recently than there ever has been about Chinese. The clause which may apply to these people runs:—"A person shall not be deemed to be of British birth or par* entage by reason that he or his parents or either of them is a naturalised British subject, or by reason that he is an aboriginal native, or the descendant of an aboriginal native of any Dominion, colony, or possession or protectorate of His Majesty."
