Tho Canterbury Jockey Club's winter meeting opened to-day in fine weather, but there was a decidedly wintry touch In the air. The luck of tho Canterbury Jockey Club in the /matter of weather for its meetings has frequently been commented on. and It was again In evidence to-day for tho opening of the Grand National carnival. Gamecock tried to win the Trial Hurdle Handicap from end to end, but Bombproof was with him when they turned for home, and he wore the top-weight down Bombproof will make a useful horse, as he has a lot to learn abcut jumping., yet Gamecock's record is a win and two secmitw over hurdles in about three weeks, and he may win nr-'n this week Tatimi was farorite, but failed to stay. Calma was going well when she fell at the second to last hurdle, Samlel broke .a pastern when prominent about six ftirlongs from home, and he was destroyed.

General Pe-.Vin was favorite for the Hunters' Hurdle Handicap, but he took off too soon at the first hurdle and lost his rider. Slgnyslan was one of the leaders all the way, and stalling off All Serene, ho won with a little spare. Blazeaway was third, followed l)y Gaekwar, who was running on. The performance of Signyslan wag a good one under his grer.t load

The Jumpers' Flat Handicap was a great betting race, hut Kauri King wound up favorite. He got the worst of the start, bill moved up going along the hack,, and outstaying Gay Light, he won decisively. It was a fine effort and he is likely to start favorite for the Grand National Hurdle Handicap. Gay Light ran a good rare. but. over the longer journey in the hurdle race lie may tiro Meitehikoff v.*as handy at the finish, and so was Hylrns, whose chance in the big hurdle race cannot he ignored There were two scratching}? for the Grand National Steeplechase. Slowcoach being laid up with strangles, while Ormesby was reserved j for the following race. Lochella was a strong] fi.vortte, but his backers got a poor run. as 1 ho fell at the sod wall> after going about a mile San Sebastian made the early running, and then gave place to» Guanaco and Oakleigli ; who were joined a mile from home by Crib and Coalition At the last fence Coalition and Guanaco had drawn clear, and Coalition staying on well, won by si:: lengths. U was a fine performance, and stamped him as a good one. Guanaco ran a solid race, and hj? should'be a much hotter horse next winter. Onkieiffh and Crib both wont well alt through. Waimai appeared to be done a mile end a half froli home, but he struggled on, and was : handy at the finish, just beating San Sebastian, i who came again after losing his place at the j end of half the journey. Ormesby was favorite for the Enffeld Steeplechase? but he cut up badly, and Bill, who was second choice, also went moderately Golden Prince, a rare jumper, was one of the leaders all the way and he won comfortably. Blllv Terry finished well in second place, just beating Lawsuit, who onl: f faded nut in the airtight after going with (Jolden Prince most of the way. A field of eighteen contested the Winter Cup. Will Oakland was favorite, but he had his chance extinguished at the start. Killnwen began first, followed by Heather Sprig, and these two were in front all the way. Killowen winning with a bit to snare. Dainty Step finished on well to get third, followed by T?oynl Star, who came very fast, at the end, ; while Sir Fanciful and Gold Kip were next Checkmate was favorite for the Avonhead Handicap, and he ran a deceit race, but he was decisively beaten by Carmine, who assisted The Boss to sot up the pace all the way. No reuses could be made for Checkmate. The •vlnner. who comes from South Canterbury, is •• smart galloper, but he Is understood to suffer 'rom unsoundness, which probably accounts for '.ho fact that he lias gone so long for such a poor record. Hockham, % and L. B. Webster. An apology was received for vho absence of Mr. W. C. Weston. of fitness of character were granted to one'trainer, two jockeys, and apprentice jockeys. The certificates of five gentlemen riders were approved. The chairman reported on matters dealt with at the recent Racing Conference. A hearty vote thanks Was accorded the club's representatives at the Racing Conference.
