Mr. R. L. Parkin, ,who has been on a holiday trip to the Great Barrier, returned by the mail train last night. At last night's meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club, a vote of sympathy was accorded Mr. J. McLeod, in his recent bereavement. Mr. E. Lash, Secretary of the New Plymouth High School Board,' who has been on a visit to Auckland, returned by the mail train last night. At a' gathering of citizens at Auckland a presentation of an illuminated address, and a cheque for £472 was made to Mr. A, E. Glvoer, ex-M.P. for Auckland Central, in recognition of his public services.—Press Association. Mr. J. E. Wilson, who has been appointed Chief Justice at Samoa, arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train last night. His visit, owing to his early departure for Samoa, is a very short one, and he returns to Auckland to-morrow. A cable .from London says Sir Thomas Mackenzie, on behalf of the New Zealand Government, gave a reception to Sir James Allen at the Hotel Victoria. The function was largely attended. Mr. W. J. Chaney, New Plymouth delegate to the Taranaki War Relief Association, leaves for Wellington this morning to attend a meeting of the Advisory Board, of Patriotic Societies. Mr. Chaney expects to be absent from town until the end of the week.

The death took place at New Plymouth early yesterday morning of Mrs. Baker, wife of Mr. C. E. Baker, of New Plymouth. Mrs. Baker had been seriously ill for some weeks, and her death was not unexpected. Mrs. Baker, who was a daughter of the late Captain Looke, of Liverpool, - England, arrived with her husband in New Plymouth in 1904, and they have resided here ever since. Though of a quiet and retiring disposition Mrs. Baker was an earnest and hard worker in the interest of St. Mary's Church, and of patriotic movements and all charitable institutions conducted In the town. A kindly and sympathetic nature endeared her to a large circle of friends, who will deeply sympathise with Mr. Baker and family in their bereavement. She leaves a sou and daughter, Mr. H. C. Baker and Miss B. D. Baker.
