The Foreign Office has issued a statement to the effect that the charge that Japanese are being smuggled into the United States in large numbers appears to be fantastic and improbable. The Japanese Government would gladly cooperate with America in exposing any such illegitimate and under-handed scheme. It is hoped details of these charges will be supplied.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. THE OTHER SIDE. Received August 9,12.20 a.m.' New York, August S. Mr. Albert Johnson, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee investigating the Japanese situation in California, declared at Taconm that he had evidence proving the existence of a systematio scheme for illegally smuggling Japanese into the United States, End he would shortly submit it to the State Department and the Department of Labor. Received August 9,12.20 a.m. New York, August 8. Seattle advices state that Mr. Frank Terrace, a well-known farmer, testifying before the committee which is making an investigation into the Japanese situation in California, advocated the immigration. of a million Japanese to reclaim lands in the north-west of the United States, of which the timbers had been cut, the Japanese to return to Japan after the completion of the project.— AUS.-N.Z.
