The returned soldiers' second annual ball, which was 'field in the Town Hall last night, was a conspicuous success in every respect, there being about 400 present. The ball had been beautifully decorated with flags, and the stage was transformed into pretty alcoves, with a pleasing touch of greenery. The orchestra was a very tine combination, and the music was greatly appreciated. Associated with Mr. C. H. Fox in the orchestra were Megsrs V. Lester (violin), F. Fox (cornet), H. Lester (clarionette),6. Dick (flute), and B. Vinsen (drums). Messrs P. Skoglund and C. A. Gray were the M.C.'s. Great praise is due to the members of the Women's National Reserve, who voluntarily took charge of the supper arrangements. The success of th'e function was also largely due to the efforts of the energetic secretary (Air. F. H. Masters), and to Mesdames F. Tyror and W. Robinson and their assistants, who decorated the hall. The committee desire to express their thanks to Messrs Newton King, A. M. Robertson, C. Jackson, and Foley & Jugo for the use of their motor cars in collecting material for the function. GENERAL. Hickey, of Pembroke Road, Stratford, and late of' the Finnerty Road, had a narrow escape from a serious accident yesterday. He was dritng a horse and trap, Boutli of the Mountain Road, amongst a procession of motor cars and other vehicles coming from the football match at the showgrounds, and proceeded to turn into Pembroke Road on the west side, when a big motor car, driven by Mr. J. Davidson, of Stratford, came up from behind, and being unable to pull up in time, collided wiith the trap. Eye-witnesses state that the impact sounded like the crack of a rifle, and Mr. Hickey was sent shooting up into the air several feet, falling on his shoulder. One of the mudguards of the car struck the axle of tiie trap, smashing the wheel into splinters. Fortunately Mr. Hickey was not seriously injured, but he received a few cuts about the head, which necessitated medical attention. It iB alleged that the motor car was driven at an excessive speed, and that the driver had passed most of the other cars on the road before he reached the trap. The car was only slightly damaged, but . tlie trap was almost a total wreck. .A very interesting and instructive lecture on "Contagious Abortion" was delivered by Mr. Woods, M.R.C.V.S.
