PROFITEERING ALLEGED.
CASES AT CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, August 3. Theses in which Mr. Collins, secretary to the Board of Trade, laid informations against certain Christchurch and Lyttelton firms were listed for hear-" ing to-day at the Christchurch Magistrate's Court. The charges were:—
Aitohison, Sterns and Co. Ltd., general importers and manufacturers' agents, were charged: (1) On January 15th, they did sell to W. E. L. Donnithorne, one thousand cigarettes at a price, namely 62s 2d per 1000, which was allegedly unreasonably high contrary to the Statute; (2) a similar sale to B. Coira; (3) on January 17, a similar sale to J. Kent; (4) on January 17, a similar sale to E. Haley; (5) on January 17, a similar sale to E. Jones; (6) on January 19, a similar sale to Mrs. Willyams. Benjamins, Ltd., general • merchants, Christchurch, were charged that on January 6, they sold 500 Clarence cigarettes to Hulston and Skinner at 62s 2d per thousand. Bernard Darby, trading as Wallace and Co., chemist, Christchurch, was charged with selling to Robert E. Alexander half a gallon of borol at a price alleged to be unreasonably high, namely 455, contrary to the Statute. Forbes, Ltd., ironmongers, Lyttelton, was charged that they offered to sell Leslie Arthur Turner and Henry Voyce, rabbit traps at 37s per dozen, which was declared to be imreasonably high, contrary to Statute. ■ The hearing of the cases was adj journed till August 31.
