MOKAU COAL.
| SNAGGING THE RIVER URGED. - OUTLET FOR COAL AND LIME. | The. necessity for, snagging the Mokau r.iver, so as to enable the coal supj. plies there to be available for Tara- | jiaki, was stressed at the meeting of the Inglewood County Council yesterj day. i The chairman, in briefly reporting on I the proceedings at the meeting to estab- : lish a Progressive League in Taranaki, ; pointed out that whilst bridging the : Mokau river was being urged as one of ; the most important works in Taranaki, ■ no mention had been made of snagging the Mokau river. I Cr. Lyon, in moving that the chairman ! be tlianked for attending the conference, ; said that he would like to test the ! feelings of tlie meeting on the question of snagging the Mokau river, so as" to make, the proved coal there accessible. He considered the conference had been too one-sided in urging, the opening up of a coal-field which £equired 2i miles of tunnelling to makeTt acceßsibfe. This '■ would take years, whereas the Mokau : coal had been proved, and would be \ readily accessible, besides being seaborne. ', Or. Simpson, in seconding, said that ! Mokau had been neglected. Not only was it proved that coal was available I there, but there was also lime, which '. the farmers required. Being sea-borne, '■ it would be available cheaply, and . would tend to increase the trade of the ; harbor. • ; In the course of discussion it was stated that the snagging of .the rivet would cost about £IOO,OOO. j The resolution was carried.
