EGMONT VILLAGE. Tho event of the season in this little township, a plain and fancy dress ball, was held on Friday, 30th inst. The hall was packed to overflowing with both children and adults. The proceeds were for the hall fund, which will benefit considerably. The village footballers are playing a return match with Kaimtro on Thursday next, and . the teams being evenly matched, a good game ' should result. Luckily we nave two or three ' old rep. players, who will strengthen the I team and keep the younger players up to the mark. WAREA.
On Tuesday night, -27 th July, an the Metdents of Warea and many other well-wishers from Now Plymouth and the districts surrounding Warea, assembled In the Warea Hall to bid farewell to Mr, and Mrs. W. Rumball, who are leaving the district to reside in New Plymouth. The function, which took the form of a social and dance, was a huge success In every way, the hall being crowded with a very representative gathering of setilers and 'heir wives aud families. Judging by Its success the Warea community must have been amply repaid for their efforts in showing their appreciation of the past sorvices rendered them by the departing guests Mr. Max Parker, who had charge of the floor, kept matters moving merrily to excellent dance music provided by Mr. Parker (piano) and Mr. Norrls (violin;. The Ducker family and Mrs. Beck played sevoral extras. The dance was interspersed with an enjoyable programme of songs. These items were rendered by Miss Ruth Harding, Miss Wnterston and Mr. Stuart Casey, while Mrs. ,T. Ducker supplied the accompaniments. All items were greatly appreciated by those present. Supper, dispensed by the ladles, was much enjoyed and fully maintained the district's reputation. After supper, Mr. Alexander Casey, of New Plymouth, who- at one time resided at Newel! Road, Warea, to whom the duty of making the presentation was entrusted, expressed the regret at Mr. Rumball's departure from the district Mr. Rumball, he said, was one of tho oldest settlers of the district, and he was therefore pleased to see so many present to bid Mr. and Mrs Rumball farewell. Mr. Casey also referred to Mr. Rumball's valuable services for so many years as a member of tho school committee, and also on the directorate of the local factory, acting in the capacity of chairman, as well as an active worker in the general interests of the district. His example was one which he trusted would Induce others to take a definite active part In all matters concerning the district's we'fare, On behalf of tho settlers he then presented' Mr. imd Mrs. Rumball with a handsome silver coffee service as a marl; of esteem, and expressed the hope that thnv would long be spared to make use of It, and think of the happy times they bad spent; in Warea.
Mr. Rumba)), who was greeted with applause, thanked the speaker for his kindly remarks, aud the company generally for the pleasant evening and beautiful present. He s;.id that ho had only tried to take his part, ■as the rest of the settlers were doing, in anything for the. good of the district, and mutual gratification was araplo repayment Ho would carry away kindly memories of his enjoyable stay at ,>Ywell Road, particularly that evening, with Singled feeling' of pleasure and regret. After singing "For They are Jo)(.v Good Fellows," "Auld Lang Syne," and cheering Mr. and Mrs. Rumball, dancing was then the order until an early hour of the following morning. , The saune ladies' committee which made such a pronounced success of the Leap Year social and dance In Warea recently have In hand the arrangements for tho spinsters' social, which Is fixed to be held at an' early date in the Warea Hall., The function is being looked forward to ns ono of the chief social functions of the season in Warea, and everything augurs well for a thoroughly enjryable evening. Particulars as to prices, etc, will be seen in tho Daily News' columns. With the fine spell of lovely weather this past fortnight, advantage Is being taken all along the coast by farmers and others, and burning operations are going at top. PUNGAREHU. A social and dance In aid of tho Pungarehu Hall Improvement Fund is to be held in the local hall on Tuesday evening, the 3rd July. The ladies' committee Is sparing no pains to make the function a very enjoyable ono, and as the proceeds are to be devoted to a much needed cause, there should be a largo attendance. Considerable Improvements have been effected at Pungarehu recently by the. cutting out of a good deal of overgrown hedges along the main South Road, the result being a much brighter appearance, One of the most successful and enjoyable dances held In Punlho for Borne time was given by the spinsters of that district in the Puniho schoolroom on Friday night, the 30th July. There was a large attendance, and all present appeared to thoroughly enjoy the attractive music and other arrangements.
