ANNUAL CONFERENCE. By Teleerapli.—Press Associotion. Wellington, July 27. The annual conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union opened to-day. Owing to indisposition ithe president (Sir James Wilson) was unable to attend; Mr, G. W. Leadley' presided. It was resolved to urge that unproductive land should be brought into cultivation as rapidly as possible. The conference laso decided to agree with the principle of resumption of all land held for a long period without improvement for selection for closer settlement, and to urge the Government to take more active steps in .the matter. The following remit 'was adapted: — "That the Government be requested to give the option of freehold to all holders of Crown lands for farming purposes." This afternoon the conference is considering the following remit from Taranaki: "That, as a means o£ restricting trafficking in land, legislation be provided that, on a sale, all existing mortgages be either paid off or each reduced by a minimum of 10 per cent., increasing by 1 per cent, for every 10 per cent, of tliß rise over previous sale."
