FIGHTING IN SYRIA.
DELAYED TELEGRAM'S CONSEQUENCES. By Telegraph.—Press Asan.—Copyright. Received July 27, 5.5 p.m. Cair<?, July 20. There appears to be some uncertainty with reference to the French ultimatum to Syria, and the subsequent fighting, due to a delay to a telegram ordering the Arab army to withdraw after the Arab Government accepted the French conditions. The telegram was received by the Arab commander two hours after the expiry of the ultimatum, and in the mean/time General Gouraud's force advanced, arousing indignation among the Arabs, who ordered defence measures. The people readily responded. The Syrian Congress is app? tly dissatisfied with the result of the negotiations, and has adjourned for six months.— Reuter Service.
