HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
TEE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth Horticultural Society was held m the Soldiers' Club last night, about twenty members being present. Mr. N. K. McDiarmid presided. Tlfe ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report stated that the Society suffered a serious set back during tile war period; in fact, until August of last year, it was practically disbanded. The report, therefore, dealt only with the operations since August, 1910. The public were appealed to for their support, with the result that the Society very soon had a membership of over 200 strong. The report adds: "This is very gratifying, but your commmittee feels that by continued effort and by the holding of good shows, the membership should be still further increased. Our Society can hope for success only if it is assured of public support, and your committee hope that this year will see a large increase in its membership." The report .proceeds: "With regard to the schedule, it is felt by many exhibitors, and your committee shares this view, that in the future" this should be issued at least three months in advance of .the show. This will give prospective exhibitors, a better chance of selecting and preparing their exhibits. This is amatter which the incoming committee svill do well to consider. In conclusion your committee desires to thank all those who .made donations to the Society's funds, and all others who have in any way assisted the Society in its efforts." The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3O 4s lQd. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mr. N. K. MacDiarmid; vice-presi-dent, Mrs. E. Dockrill, and Mr. J. Paton; committee, Mr. D. K. Morrison, Miss Stephenson-Smith, Mrs. R. H. Roekel, Mrs. H. Greig, Mr. Barthorp, Mrs. Barthorp, Mr. T. Dickson. Mr. W. 11. Besley, Mrs. A. Alexander, Mr. L. B. Webster, Mr. A. Ryder, Miss A. Hempton, Mrs. G. H. McGahey, Mrs. J. Burgess, Mr. E. B. Kingdon, Mr. G. W. Browne, and Mr. J. Gibson. GENERAL, An honorarium of £7 was voted to tlio secretary., A letter was read from Mr. W W. Smith offering to submit a paper on the diseases of cultivated plants and injurious insetts affecting them. Considerable discussion took place on the number* of shows to be held, and eventually a recommendation was made to the incoming committee that a spring and autumn show he held.
