NEW RATES PROM NEXT WEEK. The new postal rates to operate in Taianaki from next Sunday were published yesterday morning, and later in the day the Post Ofiice authorities announced the new telephone charges, which also come Into force from next Sunday. The statement issued by the Postmaster-General is as follows: —

From August 1 each telephone' exchange subscriber in the Dominion is to pay an additional £1 per annum per connection, and there is imposed an increase of 5s per quarter mile for lines extending beyond the present maximum distances for which the initial rate is charged. The increase does not apply to current subscriptions due before August 1. The scale of charges for toll communications is raised as follows:—Up to twenty miles Od for the first three minutes and 2d for each additional minute or fraction thereof. Up to fifty miles 9d and 3d, seventy-five Is and 4d, 100 Is Od and od, 1502s 3d and Od, 200 3s and Is, 250 3s 9d. and Is 3d, 300 4s (id and la 6d, 350 5a 3d and Is 9d, 400 Gs and 2s, 450 (is fid and 2s 3d, 500 7s Gd and 2s Od. For communications frtftn subscribers speaking from their own telephones half these rates up to ten miles only. Night toll communications at half rates available from 10 p.m, instead of 8 p.m.
