The directors of the Hokitika Shipping Company, at a meeting this morning, resolved, to abandon the steamer I'areora to (the underwriters. The vessel is insured for £750 in the Union Canton Company. The cargo of timber ds also insured. TEACHERS GRADING APPEALS. Auckland, July 24. The Teachers' Appeal Board allowed 23 out of IG2 appeals by teachers against their positions on the grading list involving reduced salary. Mr. J. Caughey, Assistant Director of Education, explained that the extent and redistribution of the reduction were left entirely to the discretion of the Auckland inspectors, and the department recorded the result exactly aa it was supplied by the inspectors. ) Where the appeals were successful the appellants had brought forward evidence that their efficiency .had increased to a greater extent tlvan had been recognised by the inspectors, or that some circumstances or faets liad not been known to the inspectors -at the time of grading. Practically all the decisions of the board were unanimous.

. FARMERS AND ROAD TAXES. Wellington, July 24. There is a good deal of speculation as to the legislation the Government is preparing on the subject of taxation for the improvement of roads. Mr. Stuart Wilson, of the New Zealand Automobile Union, states that he has it on good authority that there is an intention on the part of the Government to grant rebates on taxation to farmers owning motor vehicles. N.Z. POLO CENTRE. Feilding, July 24. The New 'Zealand Polo Association lias arranged with the Feilding Jockey Club to provide a playing ground on which all Saville Oup tournaments will be played. Keildins is to be the polo centre for New Zealand, and, in addition to the toumanaments, two out of every three Nqrth and South Island games will be played here.
