A RECORD FROST.

EXPERIENCED IN NEW PLYMOUTH. PROSPECTS OF RAIN SOON.

The heaviest frost of the winter in New Plymouth was recorded yesterday morning, the observations taken at the Pukekura station by the Curator (Mr. W. W. Smith) indicating that there were three degrees of frost, while 011 the Sports Grounds 4J degrees were registered ✓ The cold of Saturday evening was distinctly noticeable, and the effects of the frost were observed on the ground in the earlier part of the evening. Mr. Smith states that the snap had its effect en some of the vegetation in the Park, particularly the manaku tree ferns, which suffered considerably in some instances. i The previous highest record in New Plymouth was on Thursday, when two degrees of frost were registered at the station, and 3J on the Sports Ground. Saturday morning's readings were similar. During the week the winds were from south to south-east throughout without variation, but the indications yesterday were for a change within forty-eight hours for rain (north-east).
