THE NEXT RACE TO-DAY. SHAMROCK'S SKIPPER CHANGED. By Telegraph,—Press Aosn.—Copjrljht Received July 19, 9.30 p.m. New Yorß, July 19. Mr. Burton will give place to another Bkipper for the Shamrock. This was decide'd upon after a series of conferences between Sir- Thomas Upton, Captain H. L. Garrett (th* Royal Ulster Club's .. representative), Mr. • Charles Nicholson (designer of the Shamrock), and Colonel Duncan F. Ne'ill (Sir Thes. Lipton's personal representative). It is probable Mr. NeiH or Mr, Nicholson will command the next race on Tuesday. ' There is much criticism of the, way the Shamrock was handled, and the widespread opinion is that the Shamrock was not sailed in a way, to show its best ability. • The climaS oame on Saturday, when the sloop lost much ground because of changes in ite headsail. HISTORY OF THE RACE. This international yachting .(competition is Of British origin, and arose' out of a Royal Yacht Sauadron contest, for which a prize called the Queen's Cup was offered, the tourse being round the Isle of Wight. The cup 7inving been curried oft by the U.S. schooner America, the winners conveyed It by died of gift in 1857, to the New York Yacht Club, to be held by that club against all challengers' as an international trophy. In 1870 and 1871, Britain challenged with the Cambria and Livonia, both of which were defeated. A, similar fate befel Canadian challengers in 1875 and 1881, and further British challengers in 1885, 1887, 1893, and 1893. In the,last two cases, Lord Dunravan challenged with Valkyrie 11. and Valkyrie 111. respectively, attributing his second defeat largely td the crowded state of the course. In the deciding race, Lord Dunraven, not being able to come to terms with the committee as to the <omplete clearance of the merely 'crossed the line with the * Valykrie in, order, to give the American defender a start, arjfl withdrew from the contest. A heated controversy ensued, and no further challenge from Britain was forthcoming till 1898, when a challenge was sent over by Sir Thomas Llpton, and met with a particularly cordiV.l response. The i result was the building of {lie British Bhsinrock and the American Columbia, the formfd deslinied by Mr. W. Fife, Junr., of the QSdes the latter by Mr. A,' G.
