Eeeently two young men from Canterbury left New Zealand by the Moeraki for Sydney en route to British East Africa, where the Imperial Government is offering inducements to people to settle,. Both intended to "spy out the land" there and see if the prospects warranted them embarking on the venture. At a meeting of the directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., at Hamilton last week, the question of the sale of butter to the C.W.S. was discussed, when it was decided not to entertain the proposal at present. It was decided, in anticipation of securing a free market for butter for the coming season, to make financial and other arrangements for consignment to England through the usual freight channels. Permission has been obtained by the New Plymouth Borough Council from the Finance Minister to raise the £57,000 and £72,000 loans at 5i per cent instead of the 5J rate Used for local body loans, and which is not an inducement to investors at the present time. The loans have been held up for some time on this account and finality was reached as the result of a deputation consisting of the Mayor and Borough Manager, who interviewed the authorities in Wellington a few days ago. Messrs Smith and Easton, of the Central Mart, Hawera, will hold a sale of purebAd poultry, from Mr. J. It is reported that cheese has been purchased for export next season to Great Britain at as high as Is Id to Is 2d per lb. f.ob. Home steamer, factories to be responsible for any advances in freight above the present rate of ]'/|d per lb., plus 5 per cent., New Zealand to London. Some of the bigger factories are also reported to have decided to consign cheese through the same firms as handled the produce before the Government purchases; and in the event of butter being "free" at the end of this month, i.e., if purchase is not renewed by tho Imperial Government, it also will be sent through the usual pre-requisition channels.—Wellington Post. "Profits in the land selling business have admittedly been big," recently stated a Christchurch land agent "Hardly any capital has been necessary, and the operating costs have been comparatively small. Recently a wellknown land agent sold his goodwill for £IOOO, and during Ave years he had possibly taken £IO,OOO out of the business. Nowadays practically every land ag?nt in Christchurch has liis motor car. Those who engaged in farm businesses made still greater profits. The rate of commission is fixed by the Chamber of Commerce, but often a man is willing to pay double these rates to effect a good sale. 1 honestly believe, however, that the boom has burst. Business has slackened off greatly, Eeeently two agents have (rone out of business. Bigger firms w'il, of course, stand it out, while the small #i»n will go down or aet out."
