HIDES CHEAPER.
BUT FOOTWEAR STILL DEAR. (By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. Notice has been given by Mr. Sykes (Masterton) to ask the Minister in charge of trade whether, as hides and calfskins are "now selling at a comparatively low price, he will discontinue the privilege at present given tanners of being allowed to take any lots knocked down to any buyer at the price bid ? The member considers this privilege prevents competition, and is disheartening to buyers other than tanners, and doubtless is also the cause of large quantities of hides and calf skins being withheld from sale. He also wishes to draw the attention of the Minister to the fact that, although the price of hides fell some months ago, the price of leather and footwear has not decreased.
