MAORI WAR VETERANS.
MEDALS FOR NON-FIGHTERS I PROPOSED. ; Br Trieetaph.—tress Aisoclation. Wellington, Last Night. In the House of Representatives this afternoon, Mr. Wright (Wellington Suburbs) moved the second reading of the Maori War Med.'tl Bill. Be said the Bill was intended to secure some recognition of the services of the men who served in the Maori war, hut who were not under fire. The Bill proposed that only a taedal should he given to Buch men, not a pension. Messrs Young, Mitchell, F. W. Rhodes, Harris, Atmore, Field, Hunter, and. 'Dr. Thacker supported the Bill as an act of jnstioe to Maori war veterans. ■ Messrs Jennings and Isitt opposed it on the ground ample opportunity had heen given for the claims for medals to he put, and the matter should not be reopened. Mr. Massey said there was no particular objection to granting the medals proposed by the Bill, but ne warned the House against ati agitation for pensions in all directions, the financial position of the country was good, but it would not stand unlimited demands which might be made upon it. Economy was necessary. [The message does not state what action was taken with the Bill.]
