..MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs. A. Lees (acting-chairman), P. J. H. White, P. Hoskin, H. Trimble, and H. J. Eaves. Leave of absence w&j granted to Me?3rs. R. Masters, MP. (chairman), S. g! Smith, M.P., and H. H. Grayling. APPOINTMENTS TO SCHOOL COMMITTEES. The following appointments to school committees were confirmed: Puniwhakau, Mess's T. Hayes and C. Watchorn (Commissioners); Tarata, MessrsL. Crowe and R. Morey; Tarurutangi, Messrs. G. M. Committee's recommendations.—The Teachers' Selection Committee reported the following recommendations: Mangorei, sole teacher, Mrs. M. A. Turner; Waikaka, sole teacher, Miss M. J. Hunt; Kiore, sole teacher, Miss Ford, to remain; Pembroke, sole teacher, Miss A. M. Barnes; Huiroa, assistant, Mis« E. Moir; Midhirst, Ist assistant, Mrs. B. M. Lawn, provisionally to- end of year. Miss Ryan's position: at the Rowan School to be kept open to the end of September. Mr. D. R. Hall, probationer, Tariki, to be transferred to Norfolk. FINANCE REPORT. ~ The following recommendations of the Committee were adopted:—That the matter of conveyance of children from the Glen Road to Manaia be left in the hands of Mr. Eaves to explain to Messrs Nielson and Son; That application be fcaie to the Department for payment of the subsidy granted to school committees by the Board for hot cocoa, and also for the equipment supplied. , TRUANT OFFICER.

The truant officer (Mr. G. Pascoe) reported that during the month of June he had sent out 61 warnings for the irregular attendance of children attending- primary schools. Thirty-three schools had been visited. Three parents were summoned and fined for failing to send their children to school. It was decided that the attention of the Department be drawn to one case mentioned by the officer, and that they he requested to advise the Board on the matter.

With regard to .Technical night classes the report stated:—Fifty-three irregular attendance notices have been sent to the parents of youths , attending night classes at New Plymouth, Hawera, Stratford and Eltham. The attendance at these classes is not satisfactory. Warnings in some cases are of little use and the only course left is to take these cases to court, which I intend to do.

RESIDENCE AT HILLSBOROUGH. Mr. White reported having visited Hillsborough in company with the architect regarding site for a residence, and recommended the committee to make en- 1 quiries and report to the Board upon the possibility of acquiring an additional two acre's. This would provide room for the residence and also a playing area for the children which the present site now lacks. A letter from the Hillsborough Committee was read and the Board subsequently resolved that application be made to the Department for a grant for acquiring the land. ARCHITECT'S REPORT. The architect (Mr. C. H. Moore) reported:— Opunake New School. —We have practically all the material on hand or in sight for the completion of this work. Another month or five weeks should see this building ready for occupation. Stratford High School—The contractors have excavated for foundations and have a considerable amount of shingle on the site, otherwise the position is very unsatisfactory. They (the contractors) state that they will not proceed with the work unless they are guaranteed any extra cost in material since tendering. The matter requires immediate attention. _ Reporting on other matters, the architect. mentioned that the new shelter shed school at Maimgatupoto was completed and opened on Monday, J'lly 5. Washhouse conveniences had been completed at Inglewood, Norfolk, Midhirst, Toko, Huiroa, Whangamomona, 'bepperton, Mokoia, Te Kiri and Mangahume. General repair work has been attended to at the same time. ' Repair work was done at Oniata, Mangahume, Rawhitiroa, Tariki, Midhirst. and Toko residence. In company with Mr. Trimble a visit was made to P&reketu and Mangatupoto new

schools, and it was found thatfthe work had been carried out satisfactorily. The requests of the Ongarue committee regarding drainage had also been investigated. Plans had been prepared for additions and remodelling of Toko School, additions to the Rowan and Mimi Schools, and alterations to the Mokau School. GENERAL.

A committee consisting of Messrs. Trimble, Hoskin, and Lees was delegated to report further to next meeting regarding a site for West End School. In connection with the enlargement of teh Mokau School building, it was defcirtsl that the present porch partition in the main building be removed and that a porch be added. The following basis of allotment of the first 100 marks in respect of the Cuthbert Shield was adopted: (1) Arrangement of grounds, the approach and the distribution of shrubberies, garden plots, paths, etc., clearing and levelling of playing areas, 50 marks; (2) Care of fences, boundary hedges, out-buildings, paths, and playing areas, arrangement of the appointments of the school building, 50 marks. The action of the following committees in closing their schools on account of influenza was confirmed: Pukearuhe, Piko, Urenui, tind Mokau. Mr. White reported that in company with the architect he had visited the following sehools: Tataraimalca,_Okato, Puniho, Warea, Pungarehu, Rahotu, Oaonui, Arawhata, and Opunake. Various matters relating to the needs of the school were gone into. At all the schools visited members of the several committees were present and evinced keen interest in the welfare of the children.

The matter of repairs at the Hawera So'iool was referred to the architect.

, Action is to be taken to urge on the Public Works Department the necessity of diverting portion of the Waiau stream to prevent erosion.

A subsidy of £2 for £1 up t« £2O was allotted for a shelter shed at Warea. The Te Kiri Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Committee was granted permission tp erect a monument in the Te Kiri school grounds. The Moturoa School was inserted in the list of new schools required, Mr. Trimble reported that it was in!:";de<3 to elect a committee at Manga-i-vpoto shortly. An application from Frankley Road for 8. shelter shed was acceded to.

The senior inspector was asked to inquire into the matter of shortage of accommodation <jt Fitzroy. In response to a request fronl the Pukekura Park Board, it, was decided that the children be allowed away from school early on the afternoon of Thursday, August 12tE (in Park Week). The question of management and control of the Hawera Hostel was referred to the Maiiual and Technical Committee to report on.

The next meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, August IOSi., at 4 p.m., when the election of chairman and appointment of Committees will be dealt with.
