TROUBLE AHEAD.
JAPAN AND THE STATES.
INFLUX OF JAPS TO CALIFORNIA. By Telegraph.—Press Aun.—Copyright, Received July 14, 5.5 p.m.. New York, July 12. The {ravelling correspondent. of the Globe, Mr. Bruce Bliyan, telegraphs from Lqs Angeles that serious trouble is looming between the United States and Japan. Local anti-Japanese sentiment in California is rapidly rising to a point where action may soon "be taken which will make a continuance of the present cardial relations of the two countries impossible, California already has a law forbidding any Japanese to own land, and she is about to pass another forbidding Japanese even to lease land. Still more menacing, in the writer's opinion, is the possibility of riots by Califomians. The situation is due to a fear that the Japanese, owing to their ability to work harder than wFite men on a lower scale of living, will secure ultimate control of every 'industry they enter.
The law forbidding Japanese to own land is a dead letter. Dummy corporations are formed, with White men as the nominal directors, to hold land actually owned by Japanese, and the anti-Japan-ese movement in California is furthered by small white landowners and large ranch owners, who are glad to, employ Japanese workers. • Califomians claim that the practice of the "picture brides" continues, despite the assurance of Japan that it would cease. The Japanese birth rate is so great that Califomians claim the Japanese would soon control the state. —Atis.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
San Francisco, July 12,
The immigration committee of the Federal House of Representatives has begun an investigation into the Japanese immigration situation in California. Senator Pheian testified that Japanese were being smuggled from Mexico into California. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
