DRIVE SETTLERS TO TOWNS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night, Speaking in the House of Representatives this afternoon, J{r. W. T. Jennings (Waitomo) referred to his association with she principles of liberty and Liberalism. Ha had long been a member of trade unions, yet Labor determined to oppose his election, despite the fact that one Labor candidate withdrew in hia favor. An interjection by Mr. M. J. Savage, •Vho said ''That is not true," had to be withdrawn by the direction of the iSpeaker. Mr. Jennings pointed but what had been done for Labor by Liberalism. Referring to the drift from the country to the towns, Mr. Jennings declared that in many cases it was attributable to the neglect of the back-block settlers, who, aftc*- waiting years for some of the amenities of civilisation in the shape of schools, roads, and railways, at last in despair sold out sand moved to towns in the hope of finding a little comfort in the autumn of their lives. The result was congestion in the towns. Hp opposed the construction of narrow gauge railways,, declaring the gauge should be the same on all lines, light or heavy.
