GENERAL BIRDWOOD.
b VISITS HAWERA TO-MORROW. _ General Sir William Birdwpod is to visit Hawera this week-end, arriving there to-morrow morning, and leaving again on Sunday morning. Yesterday morning the Mayor (Mr. K. Dixon) received the following urgent wire from the General: "Just heard that my ship will be delayed two days, which would allow me to visit Hawera. Would it be convenient if I motored from Wanganui on Saturday morning, the 10th., leaving the following morning? Should this be convenient I desire that there should not be more than one reception, combining citizens and returned soldiers." The Mayor replied as follows: "Yes, delighted. Suggest reception at Hawera at 11, attend representative football match in the afternoon, and Dominion show in the evening. Reply if satisfactory." About six o'clock last evening, Mr. Dixon received the following reply: "Many thanks for your telegram. Glad to confirm your arrangements, but as I will b P motoring from Wanganui on the morning of the 10th, I think 11 o'clock for the combined reception a little early. Hope you can conveniently make it mid-day. Regret Lady Birdwood unable to accompany me."
