DRAMA IN COURT.

WHEN EAST MEETS WEST.. Dunetlin, July 6. There was a tense moment or two at the Police Court yesterday morning when the magistrate, Mr. J. H. Bartholomew, sentenced a Belgian girl, Enill De Ciess, to be detained in the Salvation Army Home for a period of 12 months. The girl is about 20 years of age, but she looks much younger, She was charged with having no lawful visible means of support. The evidence went to show that she had lived in Auckland with a Chinaman, named Wong Yen, for about ,scven months. The pair had then gone to Wellington, where the girl had left Wong Yen to visit a friend in Dunedin. Wong Yen had, it was stated, giy*n her £lO to make the trip. In Dunedin the girl had visited another Chinaman, and had been 'arrested for vagrancy. Wong Yen had thereupon travelled from Wellington to give evidence on behalf of the girl. He said he was prepared to marry her. The magistrate, however, ordered her to be detained in the Army, home. On hearing the sentence, Wong Yen, who was sitting down, fell forward en his face in a faint, and the girl immediately rushed forward to his assistance. She was seized by a policeman, but struggled frantically to get away, and was finallv removed from the Court by two policemen. Wong Yen was carried out and soon came to again.
