RAILWAY GUARD ASSAULTED.
TROUBLE ON THE MAIL TRAIN. A fine of £?) was imposed liy Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., on Alfred George Marson, at the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday, for assaulting Felix Ely, an assistant railway guard, by striking him on the face with his fist. There was no appearance of defendant. Sub-Inspector Button said that on May 29 Ely was assistant guard on th» mail train, and between Leppcrton and New Plymouth he asked tho defendant for his ticket. 'Defendant said he did not have a ticket. The guar's then went away for a while, and when he came hack he found the defendant hiding in the lavatory. The man then paid his fare, hut on the arrival of the •train at New Plymouth, while the guard was- cartying some luggage from the train to a motor-car, the defendant came up and struck him a severe Mow on the side of the face. The man then ran away, l>ut was afterwards found.
