COURSING.
OPEN STAKES, Considerable luterost was taken In the second day's contest for the Open Stakes, hold at Glen Avon yesterday, by the combined New Plymouth and Egmout Coursing Clubs. The hares were again particularly strong, and it was not until the 14th courso that a kill was registered. , Although it was a little cold the public wert well catered for, the coursing being excellent, and the heats were run off with promptuess. Mr. J. Jenklnson occupied the Judge's box and gave his decisions very promptly, whilst the ofher officials all worked hard to ensure tin success of tho meeting. In the final for the Open Stakes the winner, Mons, scored a popular w i, although his opponent, also on Opunake dog, Castle Isle, got in some effective work in the early stages of the bout. Gay Lad. a popular fancy, ran very sluggishly in the third round, and the Mar ton dog. Some Hope, scored a rather easy win. Gloaming, another local dog, readied the semi-finals, and with Castle Isle, ran one of the best courses of the meeting, the hare also putting in some good work before reaching the escape. Tin the Supplementary Stakes, King Pirate won two heats in promising style, but in the semifinal Silent Wave proved too fleet at the opening, and also registering a kill, scored a win. A nr(icularly strong haro was liberated In the early stages Castle Isle showed to the point and sighted the hare. Mons then swung across, and being faster, turned the horse. This I brought Castle Isle In the running again, but again doubling Mons just missed a kill, and I in a race to the escape Mons beat Castle Islo, the judge giving a margin of two points in I favor of Mons. There was a fine attendance of visiting owners and others at a social held last evening. Mr Richards, diairman of committee, presided. The principal business was the presentation of prizes, which went to Mr. .1. Humphries (Mons) Ist In Open Stakes, £22 10s; F Jarrett (Castle Isle), 2nd., £0; F. Nicholls (Gloaming) and J. Hannah (Some Hope), £2 14s each, as runners-up. In the Sweepstake event, A. Haskell's cheque was £8 for Silent Wave's win, and J. A further donation of £3 was made by Mr. F. Jarrett, the gift In the first instance being made .to him, but generously transferred to the club
