THE TRIAL MATCH. A FAST GAME. ,B's GAIN A NARROW VICTORY. The trial match between the A and B teams, which was held at Eltham yesterday In order to Eire the selectors an opportunity of selecting the best possible team to do hattle for the prclvincc in the effort to wrest the Raufurly Shield from Wellington, at Hawera, on Wednesday, provider! a fast ami contest, the victory going to the B team by a very narrow majority 10 noiins (i\;v converted tries), to nine points "(three tries). There were several alterations in the teams In the A team. Roberts, centre three-quarted, was replaced by Stanners (Eltham), whilst Colman, the wins forward, was indisposed and was Teplaced by his club mate Tavlor Patersnn IHawgra) was also absent, his place being filled by Martin (Okaiawa) in the first spell, and Fryday (Stratford), in the second spell In the B team Atkins (Waimate) was absent, owing to having met with an accident, and was replaced at half bv Lynskev (Kaponga). Taylor (Tukapa), Smith (Old Boys), and Norgate (Rahotu), were also replaced by Thoumine (Kanongn), McDavitt (Clifton), and Rowlands (Rahotu). Though neither team was quite un to selected strength, the game showed that Taranaki will have no deartli of good forwards, the work of both packs being particularly good, whilst the flashes of back play seen on both sides show that once combination has been secured the rearguard snould Tie able to give a good account, of itself. The game was fairly even, play being up and down the Held, and it was due to the fact that they possessed a goal kicker that the B's gained the victory, as Georgo concerted two tries, whilst the A's failed on three occasions. From the kick off the A team attacked, but McKenna picking up smartiv transferred to H. The Vs now opened out. and after one passing movement had failed, Sykes got over at the end of a similar jaove. Taylor failed to -0.11. George checked a dangerous A rush, and then the B's got moving again, but Cameron checked Play continued fast up and down the field, the A's endeavouring to make it open, but the B backs particularly Georee, '.ynskey, and Oliver checked bv lining, the tackling also being good . Finally, the A's prevailed, the ball being shot by Cameron to Sykes, who passed it to Robertson, the latter when blocked passed to Fryday, who scored a fine try His attempt to convert failed, and the game ended with the B's winning by 10 points to 0. Tho southern members of the New Zealand representative Rugby team are to assemble in Wellington on July S, and with the Wellington members will leave for Auckland the saime day by the mid-day express, picking up the mid-Inland representatives en route. The Tarauaki men will join the train at Martou. NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING. Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union to-night, the chairman, secretary, and treasurer were deputed to draw up an agreement with the ,New South Wales Union for financing the Australian tour on the following basis: The New South Wales Union to pay all the expenses of the New Zealand team, and to take all gate receipts; advances to the New Zealand Union to be paid out of the first, gates until fully paid up. It was decided to make arrangements for the New Zealand team which is to tour Australia to play a match at Wcltingtun on Wednesday (August 11), following their return to the Dominion. Pending their departure for Australia no members of the team will, It was decided, be permitted to take part, In provincial anatehes. It was reported that the following referees had been appointed for matches before the departure of the New Zealand representatives for Australia; July 10 v. Auckland, at Auckland, Mr A. E. Wetherllt; July 14, v. Wanganui, Manawatu. and Horowhenua, at ralmers,ton North, Mr. Jack O'Connor (Levin). An intimation was received from the southern selectors that the following players had been picked to represent the South Island country team: Barks: Osborne (Coast), O'Cillaghan (Coast), Markhnm (Coast), Phillip (Marlborough). Bailey was appointed manager of the team. TARANAKI RUGBY UNION. MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Management Committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union was held at Eltham yesterday. Present: Messrs. Jas. McLeod (chairman), A. Neilson, G. A. Lyall, W. B. Fearon, L. Benanish, Jas. Garcia, and R. R. Tyrer (secretory). Hawke's Bay wrote offering to play Taranaki at Taranaki on July 21st—Decided to play the match.at New Plymouth on July 22nd. At the request of Auckland, it was decided to play Auckland on July 17, instead of July 24th as originally arranged. It was also decided to endeavor to arrange a match with South Auckland at Hamilton for July 14th. It was resolved that Mr. Lyall be asked to arrange for a North v. South Primary School match as a curtain raiser to the AucklandTaranaki match at New Plymouth. Kaponga thirds protested against the Waimate thirds for playing a couple of players from a higher grade—Upheld. A Maori plaver In the Waimate thirds was suspended until the end of the season. Clifton protested against Lepperton for playing G Niehoils, who played for the laglewood seniors for several years. This was referred back to Ihe club for ah explanation, as was also a protest that Clifton had' played T. S. McKoy as a junior \thon he was Ineligible, having played more than two matches as a senior. It was resolved to play a B representative team against the Walroa Sub-Union at Patea during August. It was also decided to play a third round 'a the senior Thursday competition. It was decided to vote £5 towards the Referees' Association. It was resolved to ■ submit the names of Messrs. H Card. A. F Neilson, J. S McKay, and A. H Guy "(South end), W Roch, J. Johnson and A. Page (North end), as referees to the New Zealand Union for appointment to outside matches.
