WESTMINSTER ABBEY.
APPEAL FOR ITS UPKEEP. Bj Telegraph.—press Asan —Copyright London, June 2S. The Dean of Westminster, in a letter to the Press, appeals to the Englishspeaking world to suoscribe £250,000 for the upkeep of Westminster Abbey) which, he pays, is in danger of entering a phase of steady structural deterioration. The funds of the Dean Chapter no longer suffice for upkeep. The King lias contributed £IOOO and the ecclesiastical commissioners £IO,OOO. Of the whole sum £IOO,OOO is required for immediate structural repairs. The remainder will constitute a fund to beep the Abbey in complete repair in the future. 'liie Dean points out that the space available in the Abbey for commemoration of the honored dead has become exceedingly limited, and, unless the removal of the less important memorials from the Abbey to the cloisters is authorised, Rome other- meanß of commemoration of the Empire's illustrious dead must soon be obtained.—Aus.-N.Z.
