ALLEGED BIGAMY. Bf JfclejMpli —Press Assn.—Copyiltbt. Palmerston N., June 29. A white-haired old man, aged 71 years, named Peter Herbert Hickson, appeared before Mr. Stout, S.M., to-day, charged with having on September 14, 1874, at Masterton, married Bridget Higgins, and on August 6, 1919, gone through a form of marriage with Annie Laurenson, thus committing bigamy. The accused has been remanded till Monday on bail. THE PUBLIC SERVICE. Wellington, June 29. Speaking at the conference of the Public Service Association, Mr. W. M. Wright, chairman, said that the most important question the association had to deal with was compensation for ,the increased cost of living. It was in the nature of their official duty and they mast act in a constitutional manner; but, observing the effect of constitutional attitude, there arose a doubt in their minds as to whether to a large extent they were not handicapped by adhering to that constitutional attitude. They hoped the Government would recognise their position in that respect, and treat them in as liberal a manner as those who had adopted other means to obtain satisfaction of their demands. A CHASE AND ARREST. Timaru, Last Night. At Temuka this afternoon, Leonard George Lyle, of Timaru, was arrested for passing alleged valueless cheques. Mr. Sheen, one of the victims, pulled him off the train, and accused struck Mr. Sheen and bolted. A constable and several others chased him a considerable distance and caught him. THEFT AT INVEROARGILL. Invercargill, Last Night. A drapery shop occupied by Misses Hutter was entered some time lait night, and goods to the value of £33 stolen. A SERIOUS CHARGE. Invercargill, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, William Gunn Mcintosh and Norman Mcintosh were charged with committing rape on a married woman at Tokanui on June 18. The accused reserved their defence and were committed for trial.
