Mrs. Elizabeth West died in Christchurch recently, aged S2 years. She was the widow of the late Rev. William West, of Southbridgc. Hector Mac Loan, of Knox Church, lnvercargfll, and decided to place it in his liands. Highly eulogistic references were made to Mr. Mac Lean's worth and work, Mr. Mac Lean intimated his acceptance of the call.—Press Association. Captain Bark, of the Earawa, who was admitted to the New Plymouth hospital on Friday, after the arrival of the vessel from Ooehunga, was operated on for appendicitis yesterday morning. The operation was successful, and it is expected that Captain Bark will be able to leave the hospital in about n fortnight's time, Mr. Alex. G. Henderson, M.A., has accepted the position of lecturer in journalism, which the Board of Governors of Canterbury College last year decided to establish. Mr. Henderson is a wellknown figure in New Zealand journalism. He started as a reporter on the Lyttelton Times, became editor of the Star (published from the same office), then associate editor of the Lyttelton Times, and, on the retirement of Mr. Robert Bell from the managing directorship, he was appointed manager of the Lyttelton Times, an experiment which proved remarkably successful. Mr. Henderson has the practical experience and the necessary scholarship to equip him for the distinguished position to whifh he has now been raised, and Canterbury v College is to be congratulated upon its wise choice.
