COURSING.
OPEN STAKES TO-DAY. Considerable interest was taken In the draw for places last evening of dogs engaged in the Open Stakes, at Glen Avon to-day, commencing at I III) o'clock to-day. The. president (Air. J. Clarke) presided, and supervised the dmwliii!, which disclosed an entry of 28. Visiting doss competing are Tip L'|i, Forward March, Sea Plane; (Wansanui), Allie's l'ardon and lilaclc Ada (Wellington), Some Hope and Bijou (iirl (Marton), Whirlwind (I'atea), Inciime (Ngalrc). Opiinake is strongly representcil, the coastal noniinaiions Including Shillelagh, McDuff, Shandon Bells, Irish Molly, lions. Amongst the local entries are Gay Lad (winner at the last Okato .meeting), Kin'; Pirare, Gloaming, La Cigale, and Cornice. The weather is now settled, whilst, the hares are reported to he in splendid condition, so everything indicates a successful meeting The first round will be concluded to-day, and the semi-tlnals and finals will ho nin tomorrow. Mr. ,T, .lenkinson will act as judge and his long experience with the pastime should satisfy all owners. Mr. F. Doughty Is the slipper, and an expert at the game, whilst the committee have completed all other arrangements that should make the meeting go with a, svjlng characteristic of Glen Avon courses. ■ i At the end of July the club will hold the Dominion Waterloo meeting, and the running of the dogs in the Open Stakes to-day and to-morrow should give lovers of this class of sport some criterion as to the showing of present competing dogs In July's big meeting.
