Christchureh, Last Night. • a meeting of the Cliristchurcl ■ branch of the Returned Soldiers' As* ■ aociation, the following motion wa» carried:— "That this meeting of returned i soldiers and their dependents, expressei I its strong disapproval of the actldn ol ! the Government in withdrawing, wltkout i due notice, the advances under part 8 of the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement • Act. It considers the only equitable and honorable course open to P<tniamen| t is to make the benefits of the Act avail* . able to all soldiers at present entitled to them, and so avoid penalising thosf • soldiers who have had .no opportunity of taking advantage of its provisions. It also desires to point out that many soldiers have deferred making applic# tion, relying on the definite promise of the Prime Minister that 12 months' notice would bo given of any curtail?! ment of the Act. It further calls the Government to bear any loss inij currcd by those who entered Ipto con* tracts and signed options prior to fcha announcement of the stoppage by Hons D. H. Guthrie (the Minister of Lands).'* The following motion was also etr* ried: "That the Government again ba urged to give serious consideration to, (he land settlement scheme submitted' by the N.Z.R.S.A., and so give evidence l of their sincerity to settle all returned; soldiers in the shortest possible time. 1 *
