I JOCKEY CLUB'S EIGHTS. j EXTENSION WANTED I At last night's meeting of the N* , Plymouth Borough Council, a letter wj received from the Taranaki Jockey Clu , acknowledging receipt of a copy of fl , borough solicitors' opinion, and statii that the committee of the club wi • aware that the council liad no power a . grant to the club any powers beyoi t those conferred by the Act relating | i the reserve. When the deputation fro: . the club waited on the council, it was i) -, tended to inquest the council, at tl , expense of the club, to obtain an ameni i ment of the Act in the direction of ii . creasing the width of the course, to thri i and a-half chains; entitling the club, i ; use the course for. three extra days | - each year; authorising the club to pe I mit other clubs to use the course for n< . exceeding four days a year; to extei . the time for exercising horses till ] a.m.; and to prohibit the erection { buildings, etc., within the boundary i the course. With regard to the erection, of, buih: ' ings, etc., within the boundary of t{ t course, the letter stated that it appears from the borough solicitors' opinio* thi ' the present position was quite statists' tory from the club's standpoint, It wi quite possible, however, that eitberautl orities might differ, and therefore, If an amendment was made in the Act, It WJ suggested that the point could be mad clear, and all doubt removed. The clu was in negotiation for the purchase ( further land, as part of an exttaehj scheme for improvement, but the- pul chase was dependent upon the club ol taining the powers indicated, j Thei powers could only be obtained "by « amendment of the Act, and such aatenc ment could only be obtained by tb council. The council was therefore dfi ected to request the council to tab. whatever steps may be necessary to gi* effect to the objects of the club, and 5 the council would accede to this reque* the club would pay all expense incurre by the council in connection with tl! matter. ; The Mayor said the club wanted tb council to promote the Bill, because I could not do it itself. ''. \ It was decided, that the Jockey Clu be'informed that the council was guidac by the opinion of the borough solicitor: in regard- to building on the inner area and that if the Jockey Club desire fui ther advice the council was prepared t< obtain such advice at the club's expense and that the other matters in dispute were not of sufficient importance to waf rant an amendment of the Act.
