IN DEFENCE MATTERS. By Telegraph.—Presi Assn—Copyright. Melbourne, June 2(!. Speaking at the Empire League luncheon Rear-Admiral Clarkson stressed the need for uniformity in naval defence. He strongly urged that the league should endeavor to bring about co-or-dination of the Dominions, in order that the Pacific and Indian Oceans and Australia and New Zealand should have adequate naval defence. He said it was unreasonable to expect Australia to assume this defence with her navy without the help of the other DominionsGeneral Sir John Monash declared that the Empire must have only one navy and army and each Dominion must bear its own share of the burden* The League of Nations was not going to prevent war and it was necessary to be equipped. Had the Australians at Gallipoli had one-tenth the equipment his command in France had they would havs made short work of Turkey and been in Constantinople in a month. Ha hoped the pending proposals would provide that the future Australian army would be adequately N.Z. Cable Assn.
