HAWERA'S NEW HOSPITAL.
THE SKELETON SCHEME. At Monday's meeting of the Hawem Hospital Board, the special committcs appointed to bring forward proposals regarding a new hospital, recommended the following skeleton scheme: (a) Main hospital with four wards of 22 beds each (two male and two female); (b) children's ward of 16 beds; (c) infectious diseases block providing for male scarlet fever ward of C beds, female scarlet fever ward of 6 beds, two diphtheria wards (male and female) of 6 beds each; two and one-bed observation wards. These wards are to bo built so as to be easily extended at some future time, giving an additional 6 beds each. The maternity ward is to*be omitted for the present. but space to be allotted for it on the main plan. It was also recommended that the consumptive block be left over until the Department is consulted, but that space be allotted on the site plan. Provision was to be made to accommodate 60 nurses, including night staff of. say, six or seven in a separate building. Space was to be left for the surgeon's house on the site plan, and the secretary's office wa3 to form part of the main building, with board room attached. A separate building as a secretary's residence is to be provided on the same site, and space is to be allotted for a porter's lodge near the main entrance. The following is a summary of the accommodation, which it is suggested should be provided in the meantime: Main hospital, males 44 beds, females 44 beds, children 1C beds; infectious diseases, males 12 beds, females 12 beds; observation, 3 beds; total, 131 beds. Speaking of the provision for infe:tious diseases, the medical superintendent said that twelve beds were not sufficient for any particular disease- He thought that the extension provided for in the future should be made at the heginning. The report was adopted, with the addition proposed by the medical superintendent of twelve beds for infectious diseases.—Star.
