STRATFORD.

(Stratford Representative: W. J. Wilson, Brriadwty North. 'Phone 3SB. P.O. Box 123.) SUPPOSED CASE OF DROWNING. June 23. A party of settlers under police direction are dragging the Manganui River at Tuna in search of the body of a young man named W. Smith, who it is supposed, was drowned while fording the river on Monday. It is stated that Smith, who has property in the Croydon Soldiers' Settlement, left the residence of his father-in-law, W. A. Wright, of Tuna, on Monday to proceed to his farm. Enquiries on Tuesday elicited that he had not arrived, and investigations resulted only in the tracing of the horse tracks down to the ford. The police at Stratford were informed, and on proceeding to make enquiries yesterday afternoon, found the horse about a mile below the scene. The river was above normal owing to the recent heavy rains. GENERAL. At Saturday's meeting of the Stratford County Council the chairmaa (Mr. E. Walter) intimated that Councillors Mackay and Hancock had decided to resign their positions on the council, owing to their leaving the district. As there was some very important business (rates and estimates) to be brdught up at next meeting, of which the members referred to had a thorough grasp, he had asked thorn to hold over their resignations in the meantime. He was pleased to say that they had agreed to do so, for which he„thanked them. A pretty wedding was solemnised at the Methodist Church early this mora* ing, when Miss Hilda M. White, only daughter of Mr. R. H. White, was married to Mr. A. Dickinson, of Stratford. The Rev. L. B. Neale officiated, Mr, J. B. Clemow acted as groojnsman, and Miss Butcher as bridesmaid. The late Mrs. Mudford, who died on Monday night, was the relict of H. W. Mudford. and had resided in Stratford for the past nine years. Deceased is survived by a family of four daughters and two sons: Mrs. Day (Wellington), Mrs. G. Henry (Stratford), and Misses Rose and Agnes (Stratford), and Messrs, Roy and Len Mudford. At the Stratford Methodist Church today, Miss Olive Jago, of Stratford, was married to Mr. L. J. F. Jones, of Mangorei, the Rev. L. B. Neale officiating, The groomsman was Mr. Baker, and Miss Jago was bridesmaid. After the I ceremony a large number of friends attended the breakfast in Smith's Tea Rooms, where appropriate speeches and toasts were made. The Stratford Chamber of Commerce has received advice that those desirous of taking advantage of the direct steamer from the United Kingdom to New Plymouth must notify the tonnage required to the New Plymouth agent of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Com- [ pany by the end of thi3 week.
