UNITED WITHDRAW FROM COMPETITION. TUKAPA PI,AY OLD BOYS TO-DAY. United have withdrawn from the Saturday senior competlton. Teams having a bye wlil take Unitcd's place in the fixtures. Today, Tukapa will take United's place, and meet the Old Boys at Western Park, at 3 p.m. Mr. D. Johnson will referee. NEWS AND NOTEB. Old Boys senior players are notified that the match at Western Tark to-day at 3 p.m., will be against Tukapa seniors, the United Club having withdrawn from the competition. The High School fifteens are putting in some fine practices evory afternoon on the racecourse, and under the tuition of Messrs. A. Ryder and fi. Bertrand, they promise to have a fine team In the field by the time the match with Auckland Grammar School comes up for decision. Dowland, the er-Otago player, is a tower of strength In the Star's back division, and with Manu, at half, and 0. Bertrand at centre-three-quarter will be a lot harder to beat than they were in the first round of the competition. Harvey and Koea. were the ,plck of the United backs last week, while Ffanels, in the forwards stood out on his own. The rest or the team are a very moderate lot. ICelleher, an ex-Stratford player, has also joined the Star club, and played a good game on Saturday last against United. Spence, Dean, and Kelleher were the pick of the Star forwards. The non-inclusion of Singe in the North Island team to play Smith Island at Wellington, next Saturrtav. has caused same speculation locally. In tne Soldiers' team ho was easily the best forward. English critics said he was the best forward playing In the Inter-Service competition, and one of the best thoy had seen for many a year.
